North America, Earth

San Francisco is a metropolitan city located on Earth, on the western coast of the North American Continent. It was a consolidated city-county and until the creation of United Earth, and was a part of the State of California in the United States of America. With the creation of Starfleet in the 2120s, the city was chosen as the orginization's head quarters.

Early HistoryEdit

As of 3000 BC, local Native American tribes had inhabited the area around the San Francisco Bay, and in 1776 the Spanish colonizers of California set up a fort and the Mission San Francisco de Asís. Upon independence from Spain in 1821, the area became part of Mexico. Decades later in 1850, it then became part of the United States when California was annexed and promoted to state hood. The area grew considerably due to the discovery of gold in the American River of Northern California. In 1906, the city was devastated by a large earth quake and subsequent fire. However, it continued to grow and become one of the most prominent and easily recognizeable American cities in the 20th and 21st centuries.

In the 2120's, United Earth's Starfleet chose the location as it's headquarters and the city became a priminent place for inerplanetary diplomacy and ineraction, namely between the governments of United Earth, Vulcan, and the Tellarite and Andorian Empires. In 2161, these four sovereign entities came together to form the United Federation of Planets. After the orginization's inception, the city continued to be the headquarters of Starfleet, and also a hub for off-planet visitors to Earth.
